In this passage from the New Testament letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul reminds these early followers of Jesus that they are called to shine like stars against the dark background of their surrounding culture. 

In order to do this, Paul calls them to a seemingly impossible task of eliminating something from their lives that many people take for granted as just a part of human nature. 

What is this task?

It's nothing less than the ruthless elimination of grumbling and disputing.

That's what everybody does, and Paul tells them--and us!--that this goes against their very design.
