He had already been telling the religious leaders that when they threw a dinner party, they should invite poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

And now Jesus is having a dinner party, and the religious leaders are grumbling because he is welcoming sinners and eating with them.

And so Jesus tells three powerful stories illustrating the celebration of heaven as a defense for why he is doing what he is doing.
