The Apostle Paul--the one time opponent of Jesus and his movement--became a devoted follower of Jesus who was obsessed with the Cross of Jesus. 

He put it this way: Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 6:14). 

But for his contemporaries, this sounded insane. Who in their right mind boasts in an instrument of capital punishment.
