Pop Quiz: What miracle was so monumental, so telling of who Jesus is, that all four biographers of Jesus—Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John—included it in their historical biographies of Jesus?
The greatest miracle of Jesus was his bodily resurrection from the dead. All four Gospel record this miracle that changes everything. But what other miracle was so important and so mind-blowing that we needed to know about it?
Think of some of the amazing things handed down to us by the first Christians who had been with Jesus: cleansing a leper (Luke 5:12ff); the healing of the paralytic (5:17ff); the healing of the man with a withered hand (6:6ff); Jesus healing the centurion’s servant from a distance (7:1ff); calming the storm (8:22ff); the raising of the widow’s dead son in Nain and also Jairus’ daughter (8:40ff).
But there was one miracle that was so defining of who Jesus was in terms of his identity and mission that all four gospel writers recorded it for us. That miracle is the feeding of over 5,000+ people on the outskirts of a town called Bethsaida.
