The Most Important Question in the World

Scripture: Luke 9:18–22

Question

What would you say if you were given a platform via a interview that would be seen by millions of people, and the subject of the interview was about your personal beliefs? And what would you say if you were asked pointed questions about your personal beliefs about Jesus of Nazareth?

Bono’s recent interview on “The Meaning of Life”:  Q: Who, or what, was Jesus?

“I think it’s a defining question for a Christian…and I don’t think you’re let off easily by saying, ‘A great thinker,’ or ‘A philosopher,’ because actually he went around saying he was the Messiah. That’s why he was crucified. He was crucified because he said he was the Son of God. So he either, in my view, was the Son of God, or he was…nuts. Forget rock-and-roll messianic complexes, I mean Charlie-Manson-type delirium. And I find it hard to accept that millions and millions of lives—half the earth—for 2000 years have been touched, felt their lives touched and inspired by some nutter. I just don’t believe it.”

Now imagine being asked that question not by a famous interview for all the world to see, but being asked that question by Jesus himself the answer to which has possibility to reverberate into all the world.

We’re going to look at a passage where Jesus himself asks this question directly and pointedly to his disciples, and this moment marks a change of course in his life and mission as he concludes his ministry around the sea of Galilee and begins his journey toward Jerusalem where he will be betrayed, arrested, illegally tried, brutally beaten, and mercilessly crucified.
