Here's a question for you: are you a good listener in general?
Here's another question: are you a good listener specifically when it comes to the Word of God? Would you describe yourself as "quick to hear"?
The Scriptures are the God-inspired words of God, telling the story from Creation to New Creation all centering on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
These same Scriptures give us ancient wisdom for our modern lives, and we definitely need this wisdom, especially when we encounter the trials of life.
It's in this context that the brother of Jesus gives us this instruction:
"...let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger."
These words confront us with wisdom and inspiration. But James isn't looking for a nice quote to hang on our wall, however helpful that might be.
Rather, James is outlining what it means to apprentice with Jesus in a new way of being human.
In fact, he called his original audience (and now us) to receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save our souls.
So what does it mean to be quick to hear this word which is able to save our souls?
We'll answer this question and more during this session as we reflect on this sage wisdom for our lives.
